Parents are being asked to put their children’s names down for a new secondary school planned for Coventry – even though they don’t know where it will be.

Mums and dads can put their children’s names on a list for a second Finham Park School to be opened in September 2015 by senior teachers at the existing secondary school in Green Lane, Coventry.

Those behind the project have yet to announce the site for the new school. All they have said is that it will be in the south west of the city – which takes in part of Tile Hill, Canley, Earlsdon, Westwood Heath Wainbody Wood, Cannon Park, Cheylesmore and Styvechale.

When it opens it will be the second new school in the south west of the city – after the Warwick University-backed WMG Academy for pupils of 14 and above opens in Canley this September.

The Finham bosses are applying for permission to open a free school, but describing the new school as an academy.

Both are schools which are directly funded by the government, independent from local councils and able to set their own school day length, teacher pay and curriculum, as well as employing unqualified teachers if they choose.

Finham Park head Mark Bailie said: “Detailed plans are still being discussed at this stage but we believe our proposal for a new secondary academy will provide a unique and exciting opportunity for more students to benefit from some of the best education in the West Midlands.

“We have many experienced colleagues at Finham Park who are hoping to share their expertise with staff at our new secondary academy Finham Park 2 in the future, aiming to develop a world class educational community in Coventry.”

Mr Bailie says the school will help meet a shortfall of secondary school places expected in the city over the next few years.

The government will only hand over the cash if ministers are convinced parents want the school.

That means Mr Bailie is encouraging parents to log on to a new website and say they are keen to send their children.

The school will open gradually building up to its maximum number by taking in 120 year seven pupils each year. It will also have a sixth form.

Parents interested in a place for their child should visit www.finhamparkacademy.co.uk. There will also be a meeting on Thursday, March 20, at 6pm at Finham Park School in Green Lane, Coventry.
