Maths

At Key Stage 3, students will be able to build on the skills and concepts covered in Key Stage 2 to reach a ‘mastery’ standard in order to prepare them for the demands of GCSE.

From the start of Key Stage 4, students will be following either the ‘Foundation’ or ‘Higher’ tier pathway based on prior attainment with the potential for students to change pathways if appropriate.

Students are assessed at the beginning of every topic to allow for teachers to deliver tailor-made lessons to address gaps and misconceptions and extend their knowledge.

Key Stage 3

Students will be able to develop on the skills and concepts covered in Key Stage 2 to reach a ‘mastery’ standard in order to prepare them for the demands of GCSE.

Students take part in the Numeracy Ninjas strategy (www.numeracyninjas.org) to perfect the numerical skills that are required to be successful in Key Stage 4.

They also utilise the online Sumdog games based numeracy support programme to ensure core skill is secure.(https://www.sumdog.com/en/)

Key Stage 4

Topics that are covered include Number, Ratio and Proportion, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics.

Students are assessed at the end of the topic to allow them to see the progress that they have made.

Students will also use apps/websites such as Hegarty Maths (https://hegartymaths.com/) to consolidate learning and revise throughout the year as well the PiXL Maths app that provides them with personalised revision activities based on their mock exam progress to prepare them for the GCSE exams at the end of year 11.

To ensure a successful start to the GCSE programme a targeted group of students are enrolled onto the Edexcel Maths Award Number and Measure Level 1 in September. These students take time to refine the key skills, that underpin more advanced mathematics. The students build towards an external examination in January, and accreditation for their improvements. Once the exam is complete these students begin the full GCSE programme.
