Safeguarding

We recognise that safeguarding, child protection, and promoting the welfare of children is an essential part of our duty of care to all students. All staff and governors have a responsibility to provide a safe environment in which children can learn. We understand that safeguarding, child protection and promoting the welfare of all children is everyone’s responsibility and that everyone has a role to play in protecting children. We recognise that our school is part of a wider safeguarding system for children and work closely with other agencies to promote the welfare of children. We maintain an attitude of ‘it could happen here’ and will consider what is in the best interests of each child.

We work closely with the Local Authority. For further information about the Coventry Safeguarding Children Partnership’s ‘Right Help, Right Time’ guidance.

Mental Health and wellbeing

We ensure that we talk about mental health and wellbeing as often as possible at FP2 and use a variety of activities to help educate our students on how to practice positive self-care and how to get help when they need it.

We have three trained mental health leads who can provide support for students and families, signposting them to support that is available in the school and wider community. These are Miss Dear, Miss Chahal and Mrs Klym.

We have two school counsellors Mrs Allsop and Mr Byrne who provide 1:1 packages of support, as well as drop-in sessions and some group work.

We also work with the EMHP (education mental health practitioner) team to provide short periods of support for students 1:1.

Coventry school nursing

The Coventry Family Health and Lifestyle Service aims to provide health and well-being support for children, young people, and families in Coventry.

They provide a named school nurse in each mainstream school in Coventry, to help children and young people (from school entry to 19 years old) to take responsibility for their own health and to adopt a healthy lifestyle. FP2 can hep you to make a referral to the school nurse.

An appointment with your school nurse or a member of the team could take place at the child’s school, at home, at a community centre or online, for example; via video calls or our free online parent information sessions.

Parents can call the School Nurses to discuss any child health concerns they may have between 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday excluding bank and public holidays. Note: we do work during school holidays/closures.

If your child is unwell please call your GP or call 111. For medical emergencies ring 999.

Child on child abuse including sexual harassment and violence

Finham Park 2 educates students about the nature and prevalence of child on child abuse through PSHE, mentor programme, assemblies and the wider school curriculum. Students are taught what to do if they witness or experience such abuse, the effect that it can have on those who experience it and the possible reasons for it, including vulnerability of those who inflict such abuse.

They are regularly informed about the School’s approach to such issues, including its zero-tolerance policy towards it.

If students have any concerns about child on child abuse occurring at the school they should be encouraged to share them with a member of the Safeguarding team or they can report information anonymously or named on the SHARP system.

Keeping your child safe in the community
Keeping our children safe at all times is a big worry for most parents. Family Lives created a list of top tips to help you plan for when your child may go out with friends or to a club unaccompanied by you…

  • Name, address, number:as soon as children are able to understand, teach them their full name, address and telephone number. Practice these with them until you’re sure they can remember
  • Keep in sight:there are lots of apps available now that you can install on your child’s phone so that you can see where they are.
  • Strangers:  With older children, make sure they remember to tell you who they are going out with, where they are going and when they’ll be back
  • Practice: teach older children safe ways of crossing roads, going shopping and asking adults for directions. Let them practice with you until you are sure that they’ve understood. Always remember the limits of their age and maturity. Teaching them about safety needn’t mean being overprotective – let them gradually take more responsibility as their awareness develops
  • Safe place:in busy public places, arrange somewhere safe to met in case you get separated, like an information desk. Make sure children know what to do if they ever get lost, and explain who is safest to ask for help – a police officer, shop assistant etc
  • Feel good:build your child’s self-esteem with lots of love, praise and attention. Bullies may tend to pick out less confident children or those who are neglected and often left alone
  • Say no:let children know that they never have to do anything they don’t like with an adult or older child, even if it’s someone they know
  • Listen:when your child is trying to tell you about things that worry them without interrupting so they can tell you their fears

If your child attends a group such as a sports or social group, you can make sure they are safe by finding out the following:

  • What checks have been done on staff?
  • Does the group have a child protection policy and code of conduct?
  • Is there an anti-bullying policy and can you have a copy?
  • What is done if a child is being bullied?
  • Who is responsible if there is a problem?
  • What is their accident prevention policy?
  • What are the arrangements when children go on outings?
  • Does the group have an internet safety policy?
  • How can you or your child voice concerns?
  • What signs are cause for concern?
